Wrapped Flip Flops

No-Crochet Flip Flops

What you will need:
Lion Brand Fun Fur yarn
Flip Flops in your size

Directions:With one strand, wrap the Fun Fur around the outside end of the strap of the flip-flop (close to the heel where the strap starts) and tie a knot. NOTE: It is important to tie the knot at least three times to keep it from slipping. You may also use hot melt glue to secure the yarn, but don’t put the glue where it will rub on your feet and be uncomfortable.

Wrap the yarn around and around the strap, pulling it back towards the beginning to make it dense and furry. Continue to the end of the strap.

When you reach the end of the strap, tie another knot to secure the Fun Fur. NOTE: It is prudent to tie the knot at least three times to make sure that it will hold. Secure the knot with a dab of hot melt glue if you wish.

Cut the yarn.

For the second flip flop, make sure to start the yarn on the outside end of the other flip flop in the same color that you started the first so your flip-flops match. Repeat steps 1 through 4 to complete the second flip flop.

Optional Finish your flip-flops by gluing a large button, rhinestone, or beads to the toe.

10 Creative Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day

Spread the Love!

You don’t have to break the bank to express your love this Valentine’s Day. We’ve come up with some easy and creative ways you and the kids can spread the love:

1. Make an entirely heart-shaped dinner. Bake pizza from scratch, forming the dough into a heart-shape. Place toppings in a heart-shaped design, too. Serve something red to drink like pomegranate juice. Bake brownies or a cake using heart-shaped baking pans available in the grocery store, or use a heart-shaped cookie-cutter to cut brownies or cookies. Serve the meal on decorated, heart-shaped placemats the kids can make from construction paper or paper doilies.

2. Write love notes. Tuck a love note in your child’s lunch everyday in February for a whole month of love. If that would embarrass them too much, slip a note under their pillow every night.

3. Post your love. Post a big paper heart on the wall with sticky notes and a pen nearby. Encourage everyone to write something they love about their family every day and post it on the heart. Keep it up all month long to remind everyone what is special about their family.

4. Play Cupid. Play at the Cupid Carnival making valentines and participating in other Valentine’s Day games and activities at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center, 4005 Kipling Street. The carnival is for ages 3-6 and reservations are required by February 10. The cost is $8. Contact 303-231-1300 or http://www.ci.wheatridge.co.us.

5. Learn about Valentines. Learn the history of Valentines and make old-fashioned Victorian cards (ages 6 and older) on February 14, 2pm-3:30pm at the Aurora History Museum, 15051 E. Alameda Parkway. The cost is $5 ($4 for Aurora residents). Contact 303-739-6666 for more information.

6. Play at the library. Check out the love at various Arapahoe County Libraries throughout February. Kids ages 5 - 11 can get in the mood for Valentine fun with a story, craft and treat, for free, but reservations are required at 303-542-7279. www.arapahoelibraries.org.

7. Make Valentine crafts. Wow, that’s a lot of love happening at the WOW! Children’s Museum. From February 12 – 14, kids can make a special card or craft in the art room, while supplies last. It’s included with regular admission at 110 N. Harrison Avenue in Lafayette. 303-604-2424. www.wowmuseum.com.

8. Countdown to Valentine’s Day. Create an advent calendar for your child. Write a little message on a folded sticky note and attach it to a calendar from February 1 – 14. Each day, your child can open the note to reveal something you love about them like, “I love your laugh,” “I love your freckles,” “I love how you take care of the cat,” etc. February 14th’s note? “Happy Valentine’s Day” of course.

9. Take in a Valentine show. Love the art of dance with Ballet Nouveau Colorado’s Valentine show, February 12 - 14, featuring new works created by BNC’s own company members and artistic staff. Held at the Performing Arts Complex at PCS, 1001 W. 84th Ave., Federal Heights, tickets are $16-42 through 303-466-5685 and www.bncdance.com.

10. Read a good Valentine book. Nourish a love of reading with a trip to your local library or bookstore. There are many, charming books for kids about Valentine’s Day to help you keep the love in your heart year-round.

Medical journal retracts influential autism study

Tue, Feb 2, 2010 (Reuters) — The Lancet medical journal formally retracted a paper on Tuesday that caused a 12-year international battle over links between the three-in-one childhood MMR vaccine and autism.

The paper, published in 1998 and written by British doctor Andrew Wakefield, suggested the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shot might be linked to autism and bowel disease.

His assertion, since widely discredited, caused one of the biggest medical rows in a generation and led to a steep drop in the number of vaccinations in the United States, Britain and other parts of Europe, prompting a rise in cases of measles.

“It has become clear that several elements of the 1998 paper by Wakefield … are incorrect,” the internationally renowned scientific journal said in a statement.

A disciplinary panel of Britain’s General Medical Council (GMC) ruled last week that Wakefield had presented his research in an “irresponsible and dishonest” way and shown a “callous disregard” for the suffering of the children he studied.

It also ruled he had brought the medical profession “into disrepute.”

Adam Finn, professor of pediatrics at Bristol University, welcomed the Lancet’s move but said it had been too long coming.

“This is not before time. Let’s hope this will do something to re-establish the good reputation of this excellent vaccine,” he said in a statement to reporters.

“PROVEN TO BE FALSE”

A rise in parents’ refusal to have their children vaccinated because of fears of links to autism has caused a rise in measles cases in the United States and parts of Europe in recent years.

Data released last February for England and Wales showed a rise in measles cases of more than 70 percent in 2008 from the previous year, mostly due to unvaccinated children.

Vaccination rates are now recovering and Wakefield’s research has been discredited worldwide.

The Lancet said that following the GMC ruling, it was now clear that certain parts of Wakefield’s paper were wrong.

It highlighted claims in the original paper that children investigated for the study “consecutively referred” and that investigations were “approved” by the local ethics committee, and said these had now been “proven to be false.”

“Therefore we fully retract this paper from the published record,” it said in a statement.

Wakefield, who now lives and works in the United States, has always defended his work and accused those who argued against him of making “unfounded and unjust” allegations.

The GMC is now considering whether Wakefield is guilty of serious professional misconduct, which could lead to him being struck off Britain’s medical register.
